Former Mayor Caryll Clausen Tricycle

13/Nov/2020

THIS WELL-LOVED TRICYCLE has served the community’s children well!

 Former Mayors Tricycle

This is the story of the little old tricycle that Caryll rode...

That is Caryll Clausen (nee Reid), former Manawatu Mayor, to be exact.

Caryll lived with her parents Dave and Annie Reid at ‘Hildon’, on Sandon Road, Feilding. About 1933 Caryll’s parents bought her this ‘trike’ and when she outgrew it around 1939 they gave it to Tom Bain who lived at Whakarongo. Tom had worked for the Reids and now it was Tom’s daughter May’s turn to enjoy it.

May’s parents later passed it on to the Schnell family of Charlie, Trevor and Donald at Rongomai, near Eketahuna.

As they outgrew it the next group of children to enjoy it were Brian, Dennis and Noeline Schnell who lived on James Line, Whakarongo.

This well-loved child’s tricycle sat for many years in Brian Schnell’s shed at Bunnythorpe, but before the museum’s opening it was handed to the museum trust to display.
